Yankees have found trade partner for Brian McCann: source

SCOTTSDALE — Brian Cashman hasn’t tried to hide the possibility that Brian McCann could be traded this offseason, but it appears that scenario could become a reality.

According to a source, Cashman has already identified a potential trade partner for McCann, who has two years and $34 million remaining on his contract.

McCann has a full no-trade clause, so he will ultimately decide whether he stays or goes, but given his status as the Yankees’ designated hitter and part-time catcher, the 32-year-old could decide that he wants to catch full-time, something that won’t happen in the Bronx now that Gary Sanchez has established himself as the full-time backstop.

Cashman has spoken with McCann’s agent, B.B. Abbott, about the possibility of a trade this winter, though the GM has not spoken directly with McCann.

Brian McCann’s Yankees future uncertain in Gary Sanchez’s shadow

“(Abbott) just said, ‘Keep me posted; why don’t you guys go through the process and if you have something you need to talk to us about, give us a call,'” Cashman said. “I don’t have any guidance. He hasn’t told me no on anything. I do have a personal belief of what’s more workable than others.”

Cashman said he has been “engaging offers” for McCann, but has yet to approach Abbott with anything as of Wednesday.

The Braves have been the team most often connected to McCann, a Georgia native who played for Atlanta from 2005-13 before signing a five-year, $85 million deal with the Yankees three years ago.

Another potential match would be the Astros, who are desperate for both a catcher and a left-handed power bat to insert into the lineup with right-handed hitters Carlos Correa, Jose Altuve and George Springer.

For Cashman, the question will be what type of player or players he can get back for McCann, and what his DH options would be either on the free agent or trade market.

Edwin Encarnacion figures to be too expensive for the Yankees, who would likely look to pay a free-agent DH less than McCann is set to earn. Mark Trumbo should command more than the Yankees would be willing to give him in terms of dollars and years, leaving Carlos Beltran, Kendrys Morales and perhaps Mike Napoli as possible candidates.
