Todd Bowles may get his wish after all.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, who suffered a sprained MCL in the Jets’ loss at the Dolphins on Sunday, believes he will be ready to start this weekend’s game at home against the Rams, according to a report from ESPN.
This comes a day after Bowles was adamant that Fitzpatrick still gives the Jets the “best chance to win” — despite the quarterback’s league-leading 13 interceptions and youngster Bryce Petty waiting in the wings.
Bowles said Monday Fitzpatrick must practice in some form this week if he’s going to play this coming Sunday. The Jets return to the practice field Wednesday in Florham Park. If Fitzpatrick can’t play, Gang Green would turn to Petty under center, per Bowles.
“He’ll have to practice somewhat Friday at least and have a good understanding of the game plan,” Bowles said of Fitzpatrick on his conference call. “We’ll make a decision moving forward.”
Ryan Fitzpatrick must practice this week if he’s going to play on Sunday, according to Todd Bowles.
Fitzpatrick injured his left knee late in the third quarter Sunday and was briefly replaced by Petty. He returned for the next offensive possession in the fourth quarter and proceeded to throw an interception in the end zone.
With the playoffs out of reach at this point, many Jets fans are itching for Bowles to hand the keys to Petty and see what the organization has in the former fourth-round pick out of Baylor. Bowles, however, will not give up on the season just yet.
“We’re 3-6. We’re down, not out,” Bowles said. “Right now, I’m not worried about turning the page.”
