Jets to name Geno Smith their starting quarterback

It will be Geno Smith, not Ryan Fitzpatrick, who will start for the 1-5 Jets against the Ravens on Sunday, according to ESPN.

Fitzpatrick, who was re-signed to a one-year, $12 million deal after a strong season, has put together a string of rough performances. He’s completed 57% of his passes for 1,441 yards and five touchdowns, while throwing 11 interceptions over six games.

After Gang Green’s 28-3 loss to the Cardinals on Monday, Todd Bowles said Fitzpatrick would still get the start the following week.

However, by Tuesday afternoon, the Jets coach had backtracked, adding that it was possible Smith would become the starter.

“Well, we’re going to talk about more than that, but there’s a possibility every week that there’ll be some changes made players-wise,” Bowles said Tuesday.

Smith, who lost his starting job to Fitzpatrick last preseason after being punched in the jaw by IK Enemkpali, came on in relief for Fitzpatrick late in Monday’s loss.
