Giants fined, 4th-round pick moved back for Walkieleaks scandal

The NFL levied discipline against the Giants and Ben McAdoo for the Walkieleaks scandal against the Cowboys in Week 14.

The Giants will have their 2017 fourth-round pick moved to the back of the round, after compensatory selections, but it won’t be pushed back more than 12 picks. In addition, Ben McAdoo was fined $50,000 and the Giants were fined $150,000.

“The New York Giants were notified today of the discipline for a violation of the NFL’s game operations policy which prohibits the use of two-way radios by coaches to communicate plays during a game,” the NFL said in a statement on Tuesday. “The policy states ‘coaches are not permitted to hold a radio during a game because they will not be cut off when the Cutoff Switch Operator engages the cutoff.’”

“It was a clear violation of the rules, and we accept full responsibility and the penalty,” the Giants said in a statement.

That the league elected to include a small draft pick punishment indicates that it wanted to provide an actual penalty for the Giants breaking the rules. Fines alone typically aren’t much of a penalty because they don’t hurt the club or provide much of a deterrence.

Earlier Tuesday McAdoo was asked if he was concerned that he would personally be fined for using the walkie talkie.

“I haven’t heard anything back from the league yet. I was on the field and in meetings all morning so I have nothing to report,” he said.

Asked what he thought would be a fair punishment, the head coach said, “Haven’t thought about it.”

Giants to be fined for using walkie-talkie vs. Cowboys: report

McAdoo used the walkie talkie for four or five plays against Dallas to communicate with Eli Manning while the coach’s regular communication system wasn’t working. The league prohibits use of a walkie talkie with the quarterback because it doesn’t have a way to ensure that communication stops with 15 seconds remaining on the play clock.

It’s impossible to know where the Giants will be drafting without knowing how long their season will last. But, for what it’s worth, overthecap.com currently projects there to be nine compensatory selections in the 2017 fourth round.
