The great backup quarterback mystery is over.
Bryce Petty is officially the man behind Ryan Fitzpatrick for Sunday’s contest against the Browns. Todd Bowles had refused to say if Petty or Christian Hackenberg would be the backup after Geno Smith tore his ACL in last week’s win over the Ravens.
Petty was always the likelier choice given that he previously had been ahead of Hackenberg on the depth chart, has a year more experience and because Hackenberg did not look ready for game action during training camp and the preseason. On Oct. 19, Bowles said Hackenberg was “not ready.” However, Bowles kept people guessing by saying he wanted to watch Petty and the former Penn State quarterback in practice during the week to determine the backup.
That Petty is the No. 2 means he remains the favorite to get the first game action if and when the Jets give up on this season and look toward the future.
