The latest revelation in the ongoing scandal surrounding Giants kicker Josh Brown has hit close to home for Big Blue’s most outspoken mother.
Annie Apple, the mother of first-round pick and cornerback Eli, ripped John Mara on Twitter after the team’s co-owner revealed Thursday that Brown had previously admitted to the Giants that he had abused his wife, Molly.
“As a domestic violence survivor, reading these Mara comments makes me sad, angry and completely baffled. He just doesn’t get it. This is sad,” she wrote.
Apple, who gained fame when she joined her son in the spotlight during the NFL draft in April, has since worked as an ESPN contributor and a weekly columnist for SI.com. However, she saved her immediate commentary of the Giants snafu for social media.
“It’s one thing to like someone or even a team. It’s a whole other thing to cosign the bullsh*t. Don’t cosign the bull,” she continued.
Mara made the shocking statement that the team knew of Brown’s past abuse on WFAN Thursday, one day after police documents showed that the kicker admitted to domestic violence.
“He admitted to us that he’s abused his wife in the past,” Mara said. “And I think what’s a little unclear is the extent of that.”
Mara said that Brown, who is no longer traveling with the team to London for Sunday’s game against the Rams, will be listed as inactive, but a long-term decision is “still pending.” Mara said the Giants will revisit the situation after they return from overseas.
The NFL has re-opened its investigation into the Brown case after the league suspended him for one game at the beginning of the season.
In August, Mara defended his decision to re-sign the kicker to a two-year deal after Molly Brown accused her husband of more than 20 instances of physical abuse.
